Brunswick Names A New CEO & A Federal Deadline Hits October 17th
Category: Current News | September 25, 2026 | 10 min read

In Washington, the President signed an executive order that gives four federal offices until October 17th to start rolling back regulations that burden boaters and anglers. In Illinois, Brunswick's board picked the person who has spent the last two years running Navico Group, the batteries, digital switching, fishing electronics, and components side of the house, to be the next CEO of the largest company in this industry.
What actually happened
Executive Order 14430 started a 30-day clock
The President signed it September 17th. The title is "Restoring American Saltwater Angling and Recreation."
The order sets nine deadlines. The first one falls at 30 days, which is October 17th. Four officials have to take steps to initiate action to suspend, revise, or rescind regulations that, in the order's own words, "overly burden boaters, anglers, and outdoor businesses." Those four are the Secretaries of the Interior, Agriculture, and Commerce, plus the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, who oversees the Army Corps of Engineers.
October 17th is a Saturday. In practice that means the following week.
At 60 days, relevant agencies have to evaluate their existing permitting authorities to move toward multi-year permit terms, with a three-year minimum and a standard presumption of renewal. The order names no permit type in that provision, so read it broadly. If you or your customers hold any federal permit, that is the one to watch. The remaining deadlines run out to a year and cover fisheries science, artificial reefs, and a single joint permit portal, which the order describes as an aim rather than a firm delivery date.
Be clear about what this order is. It is mostly a fishing order. Fisheries management, catch data, depredation reporting, artificial reefs. The word "boaters" appears once in the entire document, in that 30-day line.
There is one more provision worth knowing. Section 5(b) directs Commerce to make use of technological advancements for marine mammal avoidance and to coordinate with the private sector on it. That is the line the trade press has read as movement on the North Atlantic right whale vessel speed rule. The order itself never mentions whales, vessel speed, or NOAA speed limits anywhere. Trade Only was explicit that the order does not repeal or suspend the existing rule, which is a 10-knot limit for most vessels 65 feet or larger in designated Seasonal Management Areas along the East Coast.
One last thing about that deadline. Nothing in the order requires an agency to publish a list of what it is reconsidering. The date can pass with nothing visible. It is still the first point at which those rules can start to move.
Brunswick named Aine Denari its next CEO
The announcement came Monday, September 21st.
David Foulkes, currently Executive Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, retires at the end of the year. He has been CEO since January 2019. Aine Denari becomes CEO effective January 1, 2027, and joins the board the same day. David Everitt, currently Lead Independent Director, becomes Non-Executive Chairman, which splits the chairman role back off from the CEO role.
Foulkes said Denari "is the right person to lead Brunswick on the next stage of its journey." Everitt said the board is confident she "is the ideal next CEO for Brunswick."
She joined Brunswick in 2020 as Executive Vice President and President of Brunswick Boat Group and ran it until 2024. The release credits her with "launching new and award-winning boat models and brands." So she has built boats.
In 2024, in what Brunswick calls its talent development and rotation process, she moved into a dual role: President of Navico Group and Brunswick Chief Technology Officer. She has held both since August 2024.
Before Brunswick, she spent twenty years in automotive executive roles and at global consulting firms. From 2014 to 2020 she was at ZF, including as SVP leading the ADAS driver-assist electronics business, which Brunswick describes as a segment worth more than a billion dollars inside ZF's Global Electronics.
The release credits her with over 30 years across automotive, mobility, industrial, and manufacturing.
It helps to be precise about what Navico Group is, because it is not just a screen business. Brunswick formed it by combining its Advanced Systems Group with Navico and RELiON Battery. It runs four units: Power Systems, Digital Systems, Fishing Systems, and Performance Components. The brands include Simrad, Lowrance, B&G, C-MAP, Mastervolt, Blue Sea Systems, RELiON, MotorGuide, Attwood, Lenco, and Marinco.
A Shanghai software company is bringing a single-system helm to IBEX
Tonjo is entering the U.S. market, starting at IBEX in Tampa, October 6th through 8th, at the Yachting Ventures Start-Up Pavilion.
The product is the Intelligent Helm System. One software architecture that brings navigation, engine and systems monitoring, lighting, climate, and entertainment together through a single interface, with voice control, built to keep running on-device where connectivity is limited.
Tonjo says it has orders for more than 500 units and has completed its first installation, aboard an Allegro Yacht 62CAT. A U.S. subsidiary is planned for 2027.
Founder Chenglun Zhang described the goal as "one system that runs the whole vessel so its functions are easier to understand, access and control." That is easier for the owner. It also means a single failure could take down navigation, monitoring, lighting, and climate together.
Michigan took delivery of its first Vita electric boat
The Vita Seal is a 24-foot all-electric RIB, paired with an Aqua superPower DC fast charger. It is going to the Freshwater Research and Innovation Center in Traverse City, which is still under construction at Discovery Pier on West Grand Traverse Bay, with completion expected in 2027.
It will be a shared platform for workforce training, research, and testing new marine technology in real Great Lakes conditions. Discovery Pier CEO Matt McDonough said the vessel will be "much more than a way to get out on the water."
The BlueTech Startup Studio and Electric Research Vessel project is one of five projects Michigan selected in July under its Maritime Innovation Grant Program. Michigan's $1.5 million across all five is leveraging another $2 million in private investment, for $3.5 million in total. No project-level figure has been published for the Traverse City work.
Galati put boat offers on an online platform
Galati Yacht Sales released a platform called Yacht Offer on September 10th. Boating Industry picked it up September 18th.
Qualified buyers submit and adjust offers online inside a window the seller defines, and they can see competing offer activity in real time. Select yachts include a Buy Now option.
Galati is not a small shop. Founded in 1970, employee-owned, 14 locations across Florida, Alabama, Texas, California, Mexico, and Costa Rica, four of them service yards. COO Darren Plymale said the platform gives buyers and sellers "more choice in how they engage with the market."
Essentially, Galati just moved its part of the brokerage business closer to an online auction.
Why this matters for your shop
Line these up and there is a pattern, and it has nothing to do with whether the new-boat market recovers.
Brunswick rotated its next CEO through the systems business first, and then gave her the company. Power, networks, digital control, and the software that ties them together. Tonjo is selling the same idea from the other direction, collapsing every function on a boat into one platform. Vita is putting electric propulsion into a research and training vessel on the Great Lakes. Brunswick has not said any of that in those words, so take the pattern as mine, not theirs.
Every one of those makes the boat on your lift more electrical and more networked than the one you worked on five years ago.
That is your opportunity and your constraint at the same time. The work is coming. Whether you can take it depends on whether you can get into the system to diagnose it. On a boat where the helm display, the engine controls, the switching, and the climate system all talk to each other over a network, the difference between a quick diagnosis and a long one comes down to whether you can read the network at all.
The executive order is worth watching for a different reason. Note what the order actually requires here: agencies have to evaluate a transition to multi-year terms and consider a renewal presumption. Nothing is decided yet. If it does land, the customers who run charters and tours get a lower compliance burden and more predictable seasons, and my expectation is that shows up eventually as more hours on the water and more service work.

This issue is brought to you by Marine Diagnostic Tools.
MDT puts dealer-level Jaltest Marine diagnostics in the hands of independent marine repair shops. Full-system coverage across the engine brands already sitting on your lift, so you stop turning away work because the software says no.
Kits come with in-house financing over a 36-month term, and training is included. Never guess a marine engine issue again.

Three things to do this week
1. Write down every federal permit your business or your customers depend on. Special use permits, charter authorizations, anything issued by Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, or the Army Corps. If and when rules start moving after October 17th, you want to already know which ones apply to you instead of finding out from a customer.
2. Count the jobs you turned away last quarter because you could not get into the system. That number is your real capacity ceiling. My expectation is that it grows every year the fleet gets more networked.
3. If you are going to IBEX, put MDT & Tonjo on your list. October 6th through 8th in Tampa.

Presta Marine is now Malco Marine and RV, in four categories: wash, clean, restore, protect. Made in the U.S., distributed from three Ohio plants.
Elmer Carl Kiekhaefer, who started Mercury, entered the Wisconsin Sailing and Maritime Hall of Fame as an inaugural inductee, posthumously.
Do this week: list every federal permit you or your customers depend on, count the jobs you turned away last quarter for lack of system access, and put Tonjo on your IBEX list.
